Follow upstream: Tip of the week

Writing Tips

Remember the upstream theory of problem-solving: If your 17th graph isn’t working, the problem is probably in the 12th graph. If your writing isn’t working, the issue is probably the reporting. If the reporting isn’t working, the issue is probably the story idea.

    1. Hi Rosie,
Lex is a friend of mine who’s an editor at a North Carolina newspaper. I had asked my Facebook friends for the best piece of writing advice anyone ever gave them. The upstream theory of problem solving was his answer. It’s a great one, I think. I came across this recent Forbes post about it. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alastairdryburgh/2016/05/25/the-dead-fish-theory-of-problem-solving/#43cf818c741e
      Thanks for reading and writing.

  1. Hello this is somewhat of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!

    1. With a WordPress blog like mine, the answer is the former. No HTML needed, although a little familiarity can come in handy from time to time.
